Username Confusion

, 2005-08-12, by TwoGun

The anonymity of online poker helps shield players from giving off physical poker tells. It also allows people to use a username that seems to be of the opposite gender.

Men using female-sounding usernames and vice versa is certainly not new. People have been doing it for years at the various online poker rooms. Some claim that it helps them at the table because it allows them to use stereotypes of the other gender against their opponents. However, many of those claims are highly dubious, and it's doubtful that people really factor in a person's username much into their decision making at the table.

The Daily Mirror recently wrote a short article about this subject that can be found here.
